Canada’s first veterans ombudsman isn’t holding back about his contentious relationship with the former government of Stephen Harper.
Pat Stogran has written a book, titled “Rude Awakening: The Government’s Secret War Against Canada’s Veterans.”
The former Canadian Forces colonel says he tried throughout his mandate to persuade the Conservatives to see the problem of homelessness among ex-soldiers, but tells The Canadian Press they weren’t going to do anything unless they — quote — “got hit in the head with a hammer.”
Stogran’s term was not renewed by the government in 2010.
A government report obtained by The Canadian Press last week estimates 22-hundred ex-soldiers use shelters on a regular basis.
