The Regina Pats played a solid 60 minutes on Saturday and beat the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 5-2.
In the first period the Pats scored seconds after the opening face off. Austin Wagner fed Lane Zablocki on the left wing and he got the puck ahead to Adam Brooks on a breakaway and he scored his 28th of the year at 0:22 to give the Pats the 1-0 lead. That snapped a 7 game goalless streak for Adam Brooks. The Pats got into penalty trouble after that including going down two men for 1:01 but the penalty kill came up huge including Tyler Brown who was fantastic. The Pats PK went 4 for 4 in the opening frame. The Wheat Kings threw everything at the Pats goal and hit two posts but the Pats held on for the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Brandon led on the shot clock 15-4 in the period.
In the second frame the Pats got two straight powerplays in the early going but did not manage to score. They did start to carry the play however and generated some good scoring chances but Jordan Papirny was sharp in the Wheat Kings goal. Brandon did get the game even at the 9:23 mark however when Tyler Coulter finished off a scramble play in front for his 15th from Jayce Hawryluk and Nolan Patrick and it was 1-1. The Pats responded on the very next shift, 33 seconds later. Riley Woods tipped in a Jared Freadrich point shot for his 6th of the year at 9:57 and it was 2-1 Regina. That was how the game stayed after 40 minutes. The Pats outshot the Wheat Kings 14-5 in the period but trailed 20-18 overall.
In the third the Pats got it to 3-1 at the 2:21 mark. Cole Sanford snapped home his 27th from the slot with assists to Sam Steel and Seam Richards. The Wheat Kings got the game back to within 1 at 13:07 when Nolan Patrick scored on a rebound for his 28th with assists to Jayce Hawryluk and Macoy Erkamps and it was 3-2. The Pats responded quickly again, just 32 seconds later Cole Sanford scored his second of the night and 28th of the year with assists to Sam Steel and Sean Richards and it was 4-2. The Pats added another at 14:48 when Rykr Cole shot one off the far post and in from the right circle. His 8th from Adam Brooks and Austin Wagner to make it 5-2 and that was the final score. The shots on goal were 12-12 in the period with the Wheat Kings outshooting the Pats 32-30 overall.
The Pats powerplay was oh for 5 in the game and the penalty kill was 5 for 5.
The third star of the game went to the Pats Adam Brooks who had a goal and an assist. The second star to Regina’s Tyler Brown who made 32 saves and the first star to Cole Sanford who had two goals in the win.
The Pats are back in action on Monday in Swift Current against the Broncos at 2 PM on 620 CKRM.
