The Regina Pats and Swift Current Broncos played in a tight back and forth affair at the Brandt Centre on Friday and the Broncos came away with a 3-2 shootout victory.
In the first period the Pats and Broncos threw a lot of pucks on net but the goaltending was solid. Swift Current had the games first two powerplays but the Pats killed them off. The Pats got their first man advantage with 10 seconds left in the frame and had a buzzer beater chance but Child stopped it with the left pad and 1:50 carried over into the 2nd. The Broncos outshot the Pats 17-13 in the period but the scoreboard read 0-0.
In the second on the powerplay the Pats could not find the games first goal and 10 seconds after the man advantaged expired the Broncos went up 1-0. Jamal Watson off the bench skated in on a breakaway and buried his 15th of the season at 2;00. The lone assist went to Glenn Gawdin. The Pats got the game even at 11:12 when Adam Brooks tried a wrap around which was initially stopped but he jammed a second attempt over the goal line for his 35th. Austin Wagner and Sergey Zborovskiy the helpers and it was 1-1. The goal extended Brooks point streak to 17 games with 8 goals and 29 assists in that stretch. The Pats then took their first lead when Cole Sanford stole a puck at the left half wall, walked into the circle and fired an absolute bullet into the top corner short side for his 37th at 15:41 and it was 2-1. The period continued on until with less than a minute left Lane Zablocki was given a 5 minute major for boarding and a game misconduct and Swift Current went to an extended powerplay. The Pats killed the remaining 47 seconds of the period and stayed up 2-1 at the break. The Pats outshot Swift 18-14 in the period and it was tied 31-31 overall.
In the third the Broncos tied the game on the powerplay just 22 seconds in. Jon Martin put home a rebound for his 37th from Artyum Minulin and Tyler Steenbergen and it was 2-2. That’s the way the game stayed thtough the next 19:48. The Pats had 12 shots to the Broncos 10 in the period and led 43-41 overall. in the period but the game needed OT.
In OT the Broncos came oh so close to winning the game but Tyler Steenbergen put a shot wide on the back hand with a wide open cage. The Pats then had a great chance short handed when Adam Brooks tried a wrap around and had a wide open net but put the puck through the goal mouth and we went to a shootout. The Pats outshot the Broncos 5-4 in OT and 48-45 overall.
In the shootout Jon Martin scored the lone goal for the Broncos and Travis Child stopped all three Pats and Swift Current took the extra point, 3-2 the final score.
The Pats powerplay went oh for 2 in the game and the penalty kill was 4 for 5.
The third star of the game went to the Broncos Jon Martin who scored in regulation and got the game winner. The second star to the Pats Tyler Brown who stopped 43 of 45 shots faced and the first star to Travis Child who stopped 46 of 48 shots in the win.
The Pats are back in action Sunday at the Brandt Centre when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings at 4 o’clock on 620 CKRM.
