Saskatchewan grain producers are recycling a lot of plastic grain bags, even though the number is lower than the previous year.
Simply Ag Solutions, which has 17 collection sites around the province, reports a recycling total of more than 738 thousand kilograms, down from 845 thousand kilograms the year before.
Agriculture Plastic Recycling Co-ordinator Travis Quirk says the lower number was expected because of the large number of grain bags needed to store the record 2013 crop.
The grain bags are rolled up and shipped in bulk to recycling facilities.
A large percentage go overseas to Malaysia, Vietnam and Hong Kong where processors wash and shred the plastic before turning it into pellets.
