“We do a real hard clean of the alley. We’re trimming back hedges, we’re covering up graffiti, we’re getting rid of large items and picking up small stuff as well, so that it’s a real transformation.”
Michael Parker, Executive Director of the North Central Community Association says they usually have 5-15 volunteers helping to get as much done as possible.
“We’ve had people who have been very cynical and say this place is never going to get any better,” said Parker, “They’ve completely turned their attitude around from before and after.”
Staff also spend time going door-to-door, surveying residents about the major issues in the area, which gives the association a better sense of what needs to be done each year.
The association also does a large scale cleanup on September 25, with more than 100 volunteers. The Renew project is given almost $13,000 in funding from the City of Regina.
