A risk analysis on SaskTel was requested by the provincial government following the pending takeover of MTS by Bell, to see what consequences it could have on the crown corporation.
Minister responsible for SaskTel Jim Reiter says the government is not looking to sell the corporation, but the findings from the risk-analysis are now being reviewed by its board and CEO.
“We’re in a case right now where if we did get an unsolicited offer tomorrow, we don’t have the mandate to accept that. We also don’t feel like if there was a lucrative offer, we don’t have a mandate to reject it.”
Reiter says if there was an offer they couldn’t refuse, the decision would lie with the public through a province-wide referendum.
SaskTel CEO Ron Styles says the corporation continues to offer outstanding customer service, develop new technologies and grow services in rural Saskatchewan.
“In the end, we would like to be able to provide almost exactly the same services we provide in the major urban centres in rural centres as well, but it takes time,” said Styles.
