The president of the Manitoba Metis Federation says the current system of marketing freshwater fish caught commercially in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories has led to a great deal of waste.
David Chartrand says tonnes of fish have been thrown away because the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation can’t sell all of it and won’t allow fishermen to sell it.
Chartrand was commenting yesterday after the Manitoba government announced plans to withdraw from the federal Crown corporation to give fishers the chance to market their catch any way they want.
Manitoba’s First Nation and Metis leaders are praising the decision, but say many questions remain about how the change will come about and how it will affect them.
