Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada and China have embarked on exploratory talks towards a potential free trade agreement between the two countries.
Trudeau also says the two countries have reached an agreement to effectively end a lingering dispute over Canadian canola exports, although he offered no specifics.
China has also partially lifted a ban on beef imports from Canada, allowing bone in beef on animals under 30 months.
Previously, China required boneless beef from animals under 30 months.
The restriction on older animals remains in place.
The announcement was made in Ottawa during a visit by senior Chinese officials.
