After what was around a 7 hour standoff, Saskatoon Police found a man inside a Saskatoon home dead late Thursday afternoon
Police Chief Clive Weighill says shots were fired by police and as is the practice when that happens, a request has been made to the Department of Justice to assign another agency to look into it.
At 9:15 Thursday morning, officers attended to the home for what was reported as a break and enter in progress.
The owner reported seeing someone inside and also told officers he stores several firearms and ammunition inside the house.
Members of Patrol, Tactical Support and the K-9 unit attended and began clearing the home.
Chief Weighill reports officers located a man inside the bedroom with a long barrelled firearm.
Officers engaged with the man, shots were fired, then left the home and established a perimeter.
Attempts to engage the man inside weren’t successful and at around 4:30, officers entered the bedroom and found a deceased male.
Chief Clive Weighill is unsure whether the suspect fired his gun. It’s also not known what the cause of death is, including whether it was a self-inflicted gun shot wound or from an officer’s shot.
The Coroner is looking into the cause of death.
There will be a full investigation by the Major Crime Unit and oversight by another police agency assigned by the Department of Justice.
The full report will then be forwarded to the Department of Justice.
