The Opposition says the Saskatchewan government’s proposed legislation that defines the term “privatize” is an end run to allow Crown corporations to be sold.
NDP Leader Trent Wotherspoon says Crown corporations deliver an economic and public benefit.
The province tabled legislation on Wednesday that it says clarifies what would be considered privatization and gives the government flexibility to restructure Crown corporations while maintaining ownership.
The new law would allow the government to sell up to 49 per cent of a company without it being considered privatization.
Wotherspoon points out that Premier Brad Wall has promised not to privatize the Crowns.
Wall says the new definition wouldn’t change the government’s commitment to public ownership of Crowns and would actually protect them because it wouldn’t allow a majority stake to be sold.
