Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart is not surprised at farmer opposition to Ottawa’s proposed carbon tax.
In two months, The Western Wheat Growers has over three thousand farm signatures on a petition against the tax.
Stewart says the carbon tax will cost the average Saskatchewan farm ten to 12 dollars per acre.
Stewart says the carbon tax will cost a 25 hundred acre grain farm between 25 and 30 thousand dollars.
Stewart says the key problem is the tax will make Saskatchewan farms not competitive with jurisdictions like the U.S. and Russia which have no similar tax.
