Twelve more patients will be able to undergo dialysis treatment in North Battleford, rather than taking the hour long trip to Saskatoon multiple times a week.
Staff and patients recently celebrated the completion of an expansion and renovation of the Dialysis and Chemotherapy Unit at Battlefords Union Hospital.
The expansion increases the number of spaces for patients from 24 to 36.
Nurse Manager of the unit, Pat McWatters, says the expansion helps them address a growing waiting list for services.
She says 18 people had been on the waiting list for as long as a year, forcing them to head to Saskatoon for treatment.
McWatters says some people have been putting nearly a hundred-thousand kilometres on their vehicles so they could be treated.
McWatters says patients and staff will now have a lot more room in the unit, there is more natural light entering the ward and there is less travel to grab the necessary equipment that staff need.
The Ministry of Health provided 600-thousand dollars for the renovation and increased their annual funding to cover operating costs.
