A public interest group in Saskatchewan is concerned about the future of provincial community pastures as the province is getting out of running community pastures
The group Public Pastures-Public Interest is worried privatization of community pastures will lead to habitat loss for wildlife and land degradation.
Group spokesman Trevor Herriot says a government support system is important for land conservation:
“We see this land as not just being about cattle production or agriculture,” said Herriot. “But having a whole array of public good they are serving.”
A provincial consultation period on the future of community pastures ends Monday.
Livestock groups are hoping for a smooth transition in control to local producer groups for pasture management.
