The numbers are in after the long weekend, and Regina Police report a very busy weekend.
According to social media posts – all weekend long – by the Regina Police Traffic Unit, new impaired driving laws in Saskatchewan didn’t seem to deter some drivers
Cst. Warnar with the Regina Police Service tweeted out the force’s Impaired Driving Enforcement Team numbers throughout the weekend.
According to Warnar, 450 vehicles were checked during High Visibility Check Stops on Ring Road. One person had their licence taken away.
42 vehicles were checked in the Stealth Enforcement Project. Three impaired driving charges were laid.
One person blew three times over the legal limit on Friday, getting their vehicle impounded for 60 days and an indefinite license suspension.
Cst. Warnar’s tweets this weekend showed some people’s disregard for the law. He wrote on Twitter of one driver opening a beer just after leaving an off sale, and of other people failing roadside tests and breathalyzers.
However, the check stops have some residents applauding city police for being proactive. “Lots of drivers thanking us for being out tonight,” said one tweet from Cst. Warnar.
