Regina MLA Nicole Sarauer has been named the new Interim Leader of the Saskatchewan NDP in what is an historic move for the party as she becomes the first woman to lead the party.
Sarauer, who has served as the opposition critic for several portfolios and has served as the Deputy House Leader for the opposition, will replace Trent Wotherspoon effective immediately.
Wotherspoon resigned last week so he could ponder whether or not he will take a run at the leadership of the party in a convention scheduled for next May.
“As I take over this Interim role, the people of Saskatchewan can rest assured that our team and our resolve have not changed,” said Sarauer in a statement. “We are as determined as ever to keep fighting for Saskatchewan families and against the Sask. Party’s callous cuts, unfair tax hikes, and desperate sell-offs.”
In a Twitter post Tuesday night, Premier Brad Wall congratulated Sarauer saying he is looking forward to spirited debate, and working on issues together which are important to Saskatchewan people.
