A heritage building in Regina is going to be home to a new concept for people looking to get fresh local groceries.
Local and Fresh along with All-Rite Group of Companies have teamed up to create the Local Market.
Located in the old Weston Bakery Building the market will feature three distinct areas.
A breakfast and lunch counter, the Local and Fresh grocery store and a Community Market Place.
Andrew Rathwell, Co-Owner and CEO of Local and Fresh says the concept is about keeping food grown in Saskatchewan in the province and creating more local business.
“The overall local market is a bigger concept about how we can do more things with local food by having an event space, by having a coffee space, by having breakfast, lunch space. So it’s a broader vision than just having local food,” Rathwell told reporters.
Fred Mehl V.P of Real estate for All-Rite says the market concept is something they fill will thrive in Regina.
“I’m from Vancouver Island originally, I’ve seen some of the greatest markets on the island, every town has what I would say is a great food market that is more of a market, it’s more than just food. We just believe that there’s nothing like this in Regina, there’s definitely an opportunity in the warehouse which will infuse life into the district,” Mehl said
For Tim Shultz, Co-Owner of Local and Fresh and Producer, this new concept is something he believes will provide an opportunity for local farmers to grow their market.
“We’re just really excited that we’re taking this step to be able to create a better market for the producers that we work with, and the producers that Saskatchewan has, and hopefully this will open up opportunities for new producers,” Shultz said.
