Smokers will soon have even fewer places to light up in Regina, as the city’s new smoking bylaw goes into effect Saturday.
Friday morning in front of Regina City Hall, a celebration of sorts will take place, marking this day.
Donna Pasiechnik is the manager of Media and Government Relations with the Canadian Cancer Society in Saskatchewan.
She says a lot of credit goes to Regina’s city council, which voted unanimously for this bylaw.
“On Friday morning in front of city hall, we’ve teamed up with the kids from YWCA,” Pasiechnik said. “And we’re just throwing a little party to say thank you to the city for this bylaw which will make Regina a healthier community.”
Pasiechnik says this bylaw has been worth the wait.
“We’re thrilled that Regina’s bylaw will be going into effect Saturday,” said Pasiechnik. “This has been a long-time coming and we are really proud of city council for adopting such a comprehensive bylaw.”
The bylaw will ban smoking and vaping on outdoor patios of restaurants and bars as well as on all municipal property including parks, playgrounds, sports fields, the 12th Avenue plaza and Scarth Street Mall.
