Regina’s new smoking bylaw is in effect as of today and quite a few people will likely notice a difference.
The bylaw will ban smoking and vaping on outdoor patios of restaurants and bars as well as on all municipal property including parks, playgrounds, sports fields, the 12th Avenue plaza and Scarth Street Mall.
Donna Pasiechnik, Manager of Media and Government Relations with the Canadian Cancer Society in Saskatchewan, says this bylaw has been a long-time coming.
“We are thrilled, I mean it was a unanimous vote at city council,” she said.
“I think it was very progressive that the city went out and asked the community what they thought and they got an overwhelming response that they want this by law, and I think that’s very important,” she added.
Pasiechnik says youth smoking rates are among the highest in Canada and she hopes this new bylaw will help reduce those numbers.
