The province of Saskatchewan is warning people the risk for West Nile virus is rising despite the low mosquito numbers seen this summer.
Typically the Culex Tarsalis mosquito thrives around this time of year , Culex are also the mosquito that carry West Nile.
Phil Curry West Nile Virus Coordinator with the Ministry of Health says in advance of the long weekend they wanted to warn people of this.
“There’s very few mosquitoes out there,” Curry said. “But the few that are out there are Cylex Tasalis. A number of them might be infected with West Nile.”
Curry says there have been no cases of West Nile in humans yet, however Culex mosquitos have tested positive for the virus in the Estevan area.
