The President of APAS calls the formation of a provincial team to bring more police presence to rural areas a good start.
Todd Lewis said he supports a plan to create 30 new police positions and 30 re-purposed police positions.
“This is an important first step, we have had declining service from the RCMP. The RCMP still seems to have long-term issues as far as staffing and lack of staffing, replacing officers and sick time, those kind of issues, training as well. So certainly the province has stepped up to the plate,” Lewis said.
A large portion of the 5.9-million dollars in added financing will come from SGI.
The province will also see 40 commercial vehicle enforcement officers and 98 conservation officers as part of the expanded rural police initiative, following comprehensive training.
