More people are being evacuated from the Pelican Narrows area because of encroaching wildfires.
Steve Roberts, executive director of wildfire management says there are 3 large, uncontained fires in that area and one challenge for those leaving is getting through the fire.
“The priority cases of evacuations from Pelican Narrows are due to access off Highway 105,” Roberts said in a conference call to Saskatchewan media Wednesday. “It has been breached by the fire and can only be used if people are guided through that area.”
The Granite Fire is 14 kilometres from Pelican narrows but only 3 kilometres from the small community of Jan Lake. It’s also adjacent to Birch Portage.
The Preston Fire is within 3 kilometres of Pelican Narrows and the Wilkins Fire is about 16 kilometres away.
Roberts says there is a fire barrier around Pelican Narrows, and fire crews are managing the southern end of the fire, plus there are sprinkler units and resources from inside the community designed to keep a fire from encroaching.
