A promise from NDP leadership candidate Ryan Meili on Thursday.
The Saskatoon MLA says if elected Premier, he would make the minimum wage $15 an hour.
“No one should live in poverty, but the fact that people are living in poverty while working full time is particularly egregious … studies consistently show that raising the minimum wage improves health outcomes, improves the economy through increased spending, and does not negatively impact employment,” said Meili in a news release.
At the same time, Meili says he has received an endorsement from Saskatchewan’s largest private-sector union. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union represents around 8000 employees.
Meili and Trent Wotherspoon are at this time the only two people to announce their candidacy for the leadership of the NDP. A convention goes in May 2018.
