The development of the Regina Bypass may have solved a few safety and traffic issues — especially east of Regina.
However the town of Balgonie is exteremly concerned for safety reasons after the access road from Highway One to Main Street was permanently closed.
Jessie Edwards is a volunteer firefighter in Balgonie. Edwards says they are now left with very limited options in the event of a town evacuation.
He says their request to the province is simple.
“There is no other alternative,” Edwards said. “There is nothing – given our geographical layout. We can’t find a difference access route out of town in an emergency situation. We aren’t asking to keep the crossing open for public traffic. We’re simply the right-in and the right-out traffic.”
Edwards has complied a petition of over 22-hundred signatures from citizens who are also angered and worried over the closure of the road.
However so far Edwards says their requests have been all but ignored.
Balgonie Town, Council and Fire will meet with the Ministry of Highways once again Monday to discuss the issue.
