Yesterday afternoon a young man came to the door and rang the doorbell. Thanks to the dog, I actually knew someone was getting close to the house a good half minute before he got to the front door. After I got Max settled down and in to the bedroom, away from the action, I went to find out what the guy wanted.
When I opened the front door I realized I actually recognized the guy. He goes through the neighbourhood every fall offering to rake leaves. I’ve even hired him to rake before! I quickly scanned the lawn and then the trees in the front yard. There are a lot of leaves on the ground and there are a lot more still to come down, so I declined his offer. Why rake now when it’ll have to be done again in a month or so? I asked him to come back. I told him if my wife didn’t make me do it, the job was all his.
The only problem is, the guy has no rake, no garbage bags, and no one to help him out. I remember hiring him a couple of years ago and I feeling guilty watching him try to bag all of those leaves on his own. Not guilty enough to help him, of course. I know from experience that bagging leaves is a two man job, or around our house, a one man, one woman job.
I hate raking and bagging leaves. If all of the leaves had of been off our trees I would have hired him on the spot. Then I would have told my wife I spent the entire afternoon raking leaves, just for her. Taking credit for someone else’s work. Does it get any better than that?
I applaud the guy for not sitting around on his a** all day. He actually got out there and tried to make some money for himself. Seeing as most of my neighbours were working during the time this guy came around, I don’t imagine he had much luck yesterday.
If he comes back in a month, the job is all his!
