Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Conexus Credit Union, the Salvation Army has been able to make some significant improvements to the Waterston Centre Courtyard in Regina.
An area between buildings that once sat empty is now a relaxing recreation space with patios and planters for those living in the mental health unit.
Major Wayne McDonough says the goal was to turn the space into a comfortable outdoor living area.
“We like to have barbecues for the fellows in the mental health wing, so it gives us an opportunity to do that,” McDonough says. “We wanted to make sure there was an area where they were covered from the rain, so we put in a nice gazebo with netting for the flies.”
Major McDonough says having outdoor spaces does nothing but good things for the residents who are sometimes in the mental health wing for many years.
He says this new space will help the unit feel more like a home and less like an institution.
