The Roughriders were back at practice on Tuesday with a closed workout at Mosaic Stadium. It came 24 hours after Monday’s heated session which included an altercation between leading receiver Duron Carter and rookie linebacker Sam Williams.
While Rider Head Coach & GM Chris Jones admitted that in fact there was a skirmish, he felt the whole issue has been overblown. Jones said things like this happen in the violent sport of football and, in fact, there was another fight during Tuesday’s practice.
Regarding Carter, Jones said his status with the football club hasn’t changed, alluding to online reports that the volatile receiver was to be released or suspended. Regarding whether Carter will play Friday at Calgary, Jones said we’ll find out when the team declares its roster later in the week.
Carter himself didn’t want to discuss Monday’s bout at all, saying to reporters, “You’re putting me in a bad spot”. The Minnesota product got a lot of this started with his Tweet Monday afternoon saying, “It was fun while it lasted”. That led many to believe his days in Saskatchewan were over. However he giggled on Tuesday and said that was just an indication that he plans to take a break from Twitter for awhile.
There were also reports that a coach instigated, or at the very least didn’t stop, Monday’s fight. None of the Riders wanted to address questions about those reports.
