Yesterday afternoon I decided to vacuum up the leaves from the living room floor that were dragged in by our dog. It never seems to end. Every time Max goes outside, he tramples through all of the leaves in the yard. Inevitably, some of those leaves end up on the carpet. If I don’t vacuum every couple of days the living room starts looking like the backyard. Whenever I have to vacuum a lot, I always think of my sister-in-law in Craven. She’s the proud owner of a Roomba.
If you’re not familiar with the Roomba, it’s a vacuum that you let loose on your floor and it does all the work while you do something else. When I first saw a Roomba I thought to myself, “A guy had to invent that.” Most guys are useless when it comes to housework, so it only made sense that a guy came up with this contraption so he could vacuum and watch the hockey game at the same time!
Boy, was I wrong. Apparently, while watching the original “Star Wars” movie as a mathematically inclined 11-year-old, Helen Greiner dreamed of someday creating a robot like the heroic R2-D2. That, my friends, turned into the Roomba and made little miss Grenier a millionaire many times over. Millions have been sold.
I decided to check some other inventions that would seem to have a man’s handprint all over them, but were actually invented by women. Here we go.
Kevlar, the product 5 times stronger than steel and used in bulletproof vests, was invented by Stephanie Kwolek in 1966! She was trying to perfect a lighter fiber for car tires. How to go Steph!
Mary Anderson invented the first manual windshield wipers in 1903. She was probably tired of listening to her husband harp on about how tough it was to stay on the road when it was raining. How to go Mary! That’ll shut him up!
Other great inventions that you just had to think were invented by men were the circular saw, the submarine telescope and lamp, the syringe, Monopoly, and a whole lot more.
Some of the greatest inventions that changed the world were invented by wonderfully smart women.
So ladies, if you don’t hear it enough from us guys, thank you!
