RCMP shot and killed a man in North Battleford after a vehicle slammed into a police cruiser Saturday night.
Just before 9 p.m., a man called police and said he was being chased by a vehicle and being shot at by those inside the vehicle. Police spotted the suspect and after a brief pursuit, the driver slammed his vehicle into a police cruiser.
Chief Superintendent Maureen Levy says that’s when an officer opened fire.
“In response to the drivers actions, following pursuit, a member discharged their fire arm , injuring an occupant of the vehicle.”
Drew Wilby with the Ministry of Justice says an independent observer will be appointed to look over the case.
“Additionally, we understand that the RCMP has reached out to the Regina Police Service to investigate this situation,” Wilby said. “Which, again, brings that lens of independance to the incident.”
RCMP performed life-saving measures at the scene, but 22 year old Brydon Whitstone from Onion Lake was pronounced dead en route to hospital.
A woman who was also inside the suspect vehicle was treated for minor injuries, and another officer was briefly treated in hospital.
RCMP did not comment on if the driver had a weapon with him, or on how many shots were fired.
Police say on Monday a second suspect has been arrested.
Twenty-eight-year-old Amanda Wahobin has been charged with Possession of property obtained by crime in relation to this incident, and is also facing robbery related charges in connection to an unrelated incident.
