The $37 million International Trade Centre at Evraz Place officially opened today in Regina.
The first major event will be held at the facility in two weeks, Canadian Western Agribition.
President Bruce Holmquist says the International Trade Centre will have a major impact on the annual livestock show. He says the old facilities were affecting the ability to attract national cattle shows.
“Facilities was one of the reasons we were losing those kind of things, and now they’re coming back,” Holmquist says. “The Simmental breed has a national show here this year, there’s some other international events, there’s actually an international conference tied to it too. It’s pretty sweet to be able to have this facility to have it in now.”
Mayor Michael Fougere was on hand for the opening, and says it has been a long time coming.
“It’s been a lot of work by a lot of partnerships to get to this point,” Fougere says. “I know that Canadian Western Agribition will be the first available group to go in here, but this is much bigger than Agriculture. It is a multi-purpose facility, but it gives us one of the biggest building in all of Canada for Agriculture production, Agriculture shows, all of those things. We’re very pleased.”
Construction is still under way in the parking lot area.
The new building will also be home to the Canada Farm Progress Show in June.
