The Regina Public School Board has started an anonymous online survey on the subject of Davin (Davv-in) school and whether or not it should maintain its name.
The school is named after Nicholas Davin. He was commissioned by the federal government to author a report entitled “Report on Industrial Schools for Indians and Half-Breeds”, which laid the groundwork for Canada’s residential schools system.
Public scrutiny of that report, especially in light of the history of residential schools, has prompted a re-evaluation as to whether or not the school should maintain his name or not.
Terry Lazarou with the Public School Board says the board wants to be accountable on this which is why they are taking it to you as the input of citizens both in the immediate school community is requested as well as those in Regina and Saskatchewan.
The survey, which consists of five questions, will be available until December 15.
Once results are tabulated, the board will compile a report and make recommendations to the Board of Education with a decision being made before the end of the current school year in June.
