Hockey Canada has announced the twenty-three players chosen to represent Team Canada at the 2018 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship taking place in Dmitrov, Russia this January.
Saskatchewan born players that will represent the red and white include; Taylor Kirwan (Gull Lake), Mackenna Parker (Clavet) and Willow Slobodzian (Clavet).
Of the three players selected, both Kirwan and Parker played for Team Saskatchewan at the most recent National Women’s U18 Championship in Quebec City.
That team placed 4th amongst the eight team field which was Team Saskatchewan’s best finish at the tournament. Slobodzian was absent from the team as she had prior commitments with the Cornell University women’s hockey team.
Canada will open its 2018 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship against the host Russian team on Jan. 6. The schedule also has the team facing Sweden and the United States in preliminary-round action, Jan. 7 and 9 respectively, before the tournament culminates with the gold-medal game on Jan. 13.
The Canadian team will be looking to secure its first gold medal at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship since 2014, having won gold four times (2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014), and silver six times since the event’s inception in 2008
