The NDP is calling on the Wall government to provide more support for the victims of wildfires in western Saskatchewan last month.
Opposition agriculture critic Carla Beck says the province should use part of a 90 million dollar surplus from lower crop insurance claims this year to help those who suffered losses from severe wildfires.
Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart says the province has provided substantial funds to support the victims and agristability is available to those who are enrolled.
He says the province has helped with carcass disposal, veterinary health, and 100 thousand dollars to the Stock Growers fund.
“We have provided substantial funds for this,” Stewart said. “We’d all like to give more but government programs don’t cover insurable assets”
Stewart says the province does not cover insurable losses and most of the losses were insurable.
