The NDP is alarmed at the rising rates of HIV in Saskatchewan.
Opposition Critic Danielle Chartier said Saskatchewan has the highest rates of HIV in Canada and is calling on the Sask. Party government to take action.
“There are almost triple the cases in the province than the national average, we are the only province that is seeing HIV incidents go up and doctors are saying this is quote, cause for alarm,” Chartier said.
Health Minister Jim Reiter is troubled by the rising HIV numbers but says there has been a focus on increased testing.
He adds there is increased staff support for HIV diagnosis and treatment.
“We’ve dramatically increased the amount of testing that’s been done over the years, early diagnosis is extremely important, we have increased numbers of staff support, in 2010 we implemented a 4-million-dollar a year injection of cash into HIV diagnosis and various treatments around that,” Reiter said.
