The Nature Conservancy of Canada is undertaking a bison and cattle research project in southwest Saskatchewan.
The organization owns the 13 thousand acre Old Man on His Back Ranch, which has bison and cattle grazing on native grassland.
Matthew Braun, science manager, says the research project will look at herd movement and grazing practices.
“Our goal is better management,” Braun said. “Trying to balance that productivity for the animals. Trying to make sure they’re healthy and making some good gains. But trying to get good habitat for the species-at-risk out there.”
Cattle and bison on the ranch have been fitted with GPS collars for monitoring. The project will take four years or more.
