Josh Mahura will not play for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship that starts on Boxing Day in Buffalo.
The Regina Pats defenceman, who was summoned back to the team after being one of its last cuts, was told just hours before the event opened that his services were no longer needed so he has been sent back to Regina.
Mahura had been called back by Hockey Canada after an injury to defenceman Dante Fabbro that had his status up in the air, but on Tuesday morning it was announced Fabbro would be healthy enough to play at the tournament meaning Mahura had been let go for the second time.
While Mahura is not a part of the team, Pats forward Sam Steel, Moose Jaw’s Brett Howden and Swift Current’s Tyler Steenburgen are on the squad.
Canada’s first game is against Finland. It can be seen on TSN.
