Yaaaaay! Warmer temperatures are here after enduring another week long deep freeze. According to the forecast from Environment Canada we can expect temps over zero for the next couple of days with temps just below freezing expected over the weekend. You have to admit, even though we complain about those bitter cold temperatures, we do like to brag about hold cold it gets to those living in hot, tropical countries!
Despite how cold it got the past few weeks, it was still warmer than parts of Russia. It’s so cold in the Yakutia region of Russia that some thermometers can’t read the temperature as they only drop to -50 degrees Celsius. Just recently they dropped to -67 Celsius! That’s -88.6 F! Police have ordered parents to keep kids indoors and, obviously, school has been cancelled in the region. These cold temperatures are actually not uncommon for the region and never even made major news headlines there! I expect a lot of vodka and borscht to be served for the next while there.
Our coldest temperature in Canada isn’t far behind, but we’re still a bit warmer than Russia! Snag, Yukon still holds the cold record set back in 1947 at -63 degrees Celsius. In Saskatchewan, Prince Albert holds the provincial cold record set in February of 1893 at -56.7 degrees Celsius!
The nice thing about living in our great country is that we truly get to experience all four seasons and the extremes of those seasons. With the plus temps in the forecast, get out there and enjoy them and be thankful it’s not -67! However, if you still want borscht and vodka tonight I won’t judge.
