I got into this debate with a friend the other day. Don’t ask me how or why, but somehow we got onto the subject of which is better, a made or an unmade bed?
For me, the answer is simple. I love leaving my bed just as it was when I got up that morning. Making one’s bed literally take three minutes to do but a chore we tend to procrastinate with. I used to make my bed several years ago but quickly realized this was a very annoying chore and did not enjoy it in any way. I also realized it was just as comfortable unmade as it was made. The light bulb above went on and I no longer make the bed, unless it’s time to change the sheets and blankets.
Research also show leaving a bed messy may help reduce dust mites. According to a 2015 study from Kingston University in the U.K., an unmade bed could kill as many as 1.5 million mites! When the bed is made, it provides warm moist conditions that they love. I’ll concede that I didn’t know this information until this morning but regardless, I like slipping into the same spot at night as I came out of in the morning.
Now, there are those who simply can’t deal with a messy bed. For some, a made bed is a symbol of organization and comfort, mixed in with a bit of pride. They’re proud with the fact that their bed and bedroom is in order, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that! I also think it depends on whether one is single or not.
So there we go. I’ll bet you didn’t know this topic could be a great debate. What a time to be alive! When it comes to a made or unmade bed, where do you stand?
