Nearly one third of the $36 billion cost of regulation in Canada is unnecessary red tape.
Red tape is excessive and unorganized regulation of businesses.

The CFIB’s Marylin Braun-Pollon said excessive regulations come with a high price tag.
“One of the things we are doing is talking about the true cost of red tape, and cover some unique research that estimates the total cost red tape has on business,” she said.
In a report released Monday, the CFIB says “Almost half (48 per cent) of independent business would not advise their children to start a business given the current level of regulation;
“78 per cent of independent business owners say excessive government regulations add significant stress to their lives;
“87 per cent believe government has big business in mind more than small when creating regulations.
