The Quill Lakes Watershed Association have repealed their Common Ground Flood Mitigation proposal.
The watershed association feels there is not enough time to implement their project ahead of spring of 2018, which would have redirected surface water from both Kutawagan Lake and Pell Lake to Last Mountain Lake.
Vice-Chair of the watershed association Ian McNickol said the water level did recede in 2017, but there is still a need for action.
“We have seen a decrease in the level of the lake because of evaporation and little to no rainfall,” McNickol said.
“The decrease in the lake has been about 12 to 16 inches , which is a plus but being that we’re in a weather changing cycle we’re still worried that excessive rain will re-add to the levels of the lake,” he continued.
McNickol added he does not believe this is a disappointment, but rather an opportunity to do further research and engineering on the safest way to distribute water away from the Quill Lakes.
