Yesterday morning after work I had to make a few stops before heading home for the day. By the time I finally made it home it was nearly noon, so I put away I bought and headed into the kitchen to make some lunch. Chef Lewis decided to throw together a bowl of soup and a couple of sandwiches. Nothing fancy, but it was easy to put together and would hold me over until supper.
After lunch I settled onto the couch to watch a couple of shows I had recorded the night before. Max was settled on the floor and the cat was sitting in my spot, waiting for me to come and give him a little attention. I was looking forward to relaxing after a busy morning.
At 1 o’clock the phone rang. The call was coming from the school that my granddaughters attend. When I answered the phone I heard, “Papa, can you come pick me up. I’m not feeling well.” It was the 8-year old, Kelcey. Mom and dad were working, so grandma and grandpa are next on the “call” list. I told her to hang tough, I’d be there in about 10 minutes.
When I arrived at the school I made my way to the office and asked for Kelcey. The lady behind the desk asked if I was her dad. Really? She’s 8 and I’m 55. I took that as a compliment and thanked her, but informed her that I was her grandpa and was here to pick her up. I thought she would be in the office waiting for me, considering that’s where she called from. The lady said she must have gone back to class to wait, so she called the home room teacher to ask if Kelcey was there. The teacher said no, she hadn’t been back to class since heading to the office to call me about 15 minutes earlier. I heard the teacher say, “Uh oh.” We all made our way out to the hallway where Kelcey was just coming out of the washroom. A tinge of panic turned to a feeling of relief for all of us when we saw her.
So, I packed Kelcey up and we headed home where she laid on the couch and watched SpongeBob SquarePants. We hung out together for a few hours before her mom picked her up at about 4.
It’s not the afternoon I had planned, but I couldn’t have had a better one!
