A wildly popular winter festival is bringing back an old classic.
The Waskimo Winter Festival has announced the return of the South Saskatchewan Sled Dog Championships, a race series which is being ran for the first time in over 30 years.
Organizer Frank Mymryk says this event, much like those of previous years, looks to be the headliner.
“Because they’re reviving Waskimo, making it on the Family Day, the (organizing) committee is trying to make this their headline event,” he says. “And so far, so good.”
Mymryk says through fundraising and sales, they’re well on their way to bringing the races back permanently and rejuvinating interest in sled dog racing in the Saskatchewan capital.
He says combined with nostalgic memories and new interest, the sled dog championships are sure to be a favourite.
“It’s a big crowd pleaser,” he says. “We ran it before, we had anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 people on the ice watching the dog races. It’s sorta of nostalgic for historic dog sled races.”
