The MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin Ryan Meili is making a leadership bid for leader of the Saskatchewan NDP.
Meili, who was first elected in 2017, has already ran for leadership of the party in 2009 and 2013.
With the provincial budget looming, Meili says his main concern is protecting human services in this budget.
“I’m really concerned that they (provincial government) may continue down this road they started last year; really deeply cutting human services, health, education, social services,” Meili says. “It’s a way to pinch some pennies in the short term, but actually slows down your economic recovery in the long term, at the same time as it hurts people.”
Despite this being his third attempt to be leader of the party, Meili says a change in times has given him some belief this leadership bid will be successful.
“I’m elected, so I have shown I can win a race and take a seat back from the Sask Party, so that has helped people to be I think a little bit more ready to support me,” Meili says. “I think also that there’s been time for people to people to get to know my ideas and learn more about the approach that I am bringing, and that’s what brought a lot of people on board to support my set of ideas.”
Meili is running against Trent Wotherspoon in the NDP leadership race.
The convention takes place Saturday here in Regina.
