Either the U of R Cougar or U of S Huskies women’s basketball team will have the Canada West championship banner at the end of the night.
For the 3rd straight year, the two teams meet in the conference final.
The last two years have seen the game played in Saskatoon with the Huskies winning, but it will be played at the U of R tonight.
Cougars Head Coach Dave Taylor (pictured) says the environment was very uncomfortable for his team the last two years as the Huskies crowd had an impact on the game by being very loud. He hopes the Cougars crowd can be like that tonight and next week when they host the nationals.
“I hope it is loud and disruptive for them in a positive way as I don’t want anyone crossing the line, but when we are up there it has been very tough to play as they have had a band behind our bench ” Taylor said. We need to establish that here as well.
The game is one that will see two of the top five teams in Canada going at it as the U of R is ranked number two while the U of S is ranked number 5.
Taylor says there isn’t a lot separating the two teams and whatever team does one thing better will walk away with the victory.
“Defensive intensity!” Taylor insists. “Whoever is tougher and harder defensively on Friday will win. We could play 10 different games in 10 straight days against this team and go 5-5. Whatever team brings it defensively will win this game.”
Tip-off time is 7 o’clock,
No matter the result, both teams will be back on the CKHS floor for nationals which go March 8-11.
