With the NDP Leadership convention taking place this weekend, the interim leader of the party will have to step down in order to make way for the new leader.
Nicole Sarauer filled the interim role as NDP Leader since June of 2017, after only being an MLA for just over a year in her constituency of Regina Douglas Park.
Sarauer says she`s enjoyed her time as interim leader.
“The level of outreach that I’ve gotten to do, and the feedback that I’ve received too, in this position has been really inspiring and humbling,” Sarauer says. “It’s not been without it’s fair amount of work as well of course, but I’ve very much enjoyed it.”
During her interim leadership, Sarauer squared off against former Premier Brad Wall in the fall session of legislature.
Sarauer says that opportunity, as well as others, helped her become better at her job.
“Going toe-to-toe with the former Premier was an honour, and I think it helped me grow as an MLA and as an advocate, and that’s something I can’t be more grateful for,” Sarauer says. “I’ve been overwhelmed since becoming an MLA, even before becoming interm leader, with the level of the behind-the-scenes comradery I’d say there is in this house, that you don’t always get to see.”
Either Trent Wotherspoon or Ryan Meili will be elected as leader at the NDP leasdership convention.
