Nerves no, urgency yes.
Team Saskatchewan’s Steve Laycock needed a win Sunday night at the Tim Hortons Brier after starting 0-2, and they got it as they beat James Grattan of New Brunswick by a score of 9-4 to improve their record to 1-2.
Second Kirk Muyres says it’s nice to see a number in the win column.
“It feels good,” Muyres said. “We’re going to sleep well tonight. We knew we had to win this game. I’ve been 0-2 at bonspiels, but 0-3 isn’t much fun. We’re feeling good now.”
Muyres adds the hometown support has been great and makes it feel as if they are getting the love that a team across the street from the Brandt Centre that wears green gets.
“They’ve been with us from the start. I really felt it tonight. From the first rock of the first game, its been a lot of fun. “Muyres said. ” We know if we get on a roll they will really be behind us and it will be a never-ending spiral.”
For Matt Dunstone, it was a win to cherish as it was his first career Brier win.
Dunstone, who throws fourth stones for the rink, says it was a win he won’t forget and despite the fact they are 1-2, he is having a lot of fun.
“It’s cool to play in front of these fans. I’ve never played in front of this many enthusiastic fans.” Dunstone said. “I’m glad we finally gave them something to cheer about.”
The Laycock foursome will play Prince Edward Island’s Eddie McKenzie in their lone game Monday. It starts at 2 with other draws at 9 and 7.
While Saskatchewan is 1-2, Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers is 3-0. Regina’s Braeden Moskowy is the third on that rink and he is loving the Brier experience at home.
“This is a blast. This is the time of my life. We are two days in and this is the most fun I have had playing the game. “Moskowy stated, “Winning is fun and is first and foremost, but I’m really enjoying it.
Manitoba and Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs lead Pool B at 3-0. There is a three-way tie for first place in Pool A as Team Canada’s Brad Gushue, Wild-Card Mike McEwen and Nova Scotia’s Jamie Murphy are 2-0.
The top four in each pool advance to the championship pool which starts Thursday
