The crown will not be appealing the not guilty verdict in the jury trial of Saskatchewan farmer Gerald Stanley.
Stanley was acquitted of the murder of 22 year old Colten Boushie.
The North Battleford trial generated tremendous amount of interest among the public.
Anthony Gerein with the justice ministry says the crown can only appeal if there were legal errors in the course of the trial. He says there is no basis to appeal the jury verdict.
“Public prosecutions lawyers who do the appeal work here in Saskatchewan experienced trial lawyers outside the appeal section, have applied the framework I’ve described, and found no basis to appeal,” Gerein says.” “Therefore, there will be no appeal.
The verdict raised concerns among first nations people about the fairness of the justice system.
