The old expression “of you don’t like the weather in Saskatchewan, just wait five minutes” has never been more true than this past week! We went from having nearly 14 inches of snow last week to melting snow and puddles this week. It has made the walk to and from work far more interesting now.
First off, I can proudly say I haven’t slipped….yet. I expect the big wipe out to happen at anytime. However, the puddle hop has begun. Water on the sidewalks, water on the street, and pools of water by the curbs and yet, we can’t complain about it too loudly because we all remember how dry it was last fall. It’s become a dance now. Hopping from side to side, weaving around puddles, and skipping over water pools hoping it’s not icy on the other side when you land!
The key to surviving the walk for the next several weeks and ensuring your in tip top shape for the water puddle hop depends on how good your rubber boots are. Knowing if your rubber boots are hole-less is like discovering your air conditioning isn’t working on a +33 day. Once you get into the water you can quickly determine if it’s time for new boots…and believe me, I’ve learned the hard way several times! Rubber boots have become so much more fashionable nowadays thanks to bright colours and designs, not like the the typical black and orange rubber boots that EVERYBODY used to wear.
So, if you see somebody with wet socks, muddy pants, or scratched up elbows and knees, don’t laugh…teach them the proper way to do the water puddle hop!
Happy puddle hoppin’!
