Forgive me if we have talked about this before, but the season of spring brings along some wonderful smells along with the visual of melting snow and the blossoming of nature.
The humidity in the air, the melting of snow that reveals some unappealing surprises (dog owners take note – this is why you carry a baggie on walks), the frost coming out of the ground. There’s the smell of straw, manure and baby calves that has spring splashed all over it, do you agree? Nothing like pulling on the rubber boots and old barn clothes to get the full experience!
These are early days! How about the blooming grasses, flowers, tree sap running and leaves budding. The distinct odour of certain trees and flowers, it is a heady feeling, an olfactory overload!
Raking snow mould from the grass, scratching the wet surface of Mother Earth and helping her birth that which has sat dormant. Barrels that emit heavy smoke from burning garden and grass trash. Old wood and things that have been left to rot now in yard clean-up let a musty smell linger in the air.
We have endured a wild and lengthy winter filled with ice and snow, cold snaps and dark nights. It is time to lighten up and enjoy what the warmth of the sun and longer days bring.
I can’t think of a more relaxing thing to do any morning, afternoon or night but to stand and breath deep, then exhale and repeat.
Spring is here, breath it in!
