In celebration of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, students at F.W. Johnson Collegiate were able to take part in a multicultural lunch and watch several performances from around the world.
The event was put on by the English as an Additional Language students from Johnson.
Teacher Sarah Baumgartner explains why the students took part in the event.
“We just want to show the diversity of our school, and have our students that are diverse and from different cultures, take ownership of the day and demonstrate who they are as a culture.”
Baumgartner says it was important to give students a platform to showcase their culture.
“As an English as a Second Language teacher, I teach a lot of students from many different countries, and they’re here trying to fit into Canadian culture, and get to know what Canadian culture is all about,” Baumgartner says. “This is their day to take and say ‘this is who I am. This is my culture.’ It’s a very surface demonstration of culture, but at least they can show their pride in it.”
The event included poetry, singing, performances, and a fashion show.
