A 12 year old girl is recovering after suffering chemical burns when a schoolmate allegedly caused a chemical explosion on the playground during morning recess yesterday at Ruth M. Buck elementary school in the city’s northwest.
Public School Board spokesperson Terry Lazarou says it is an incident the board is taking very seriously, but it appears as if what happened was accidental in nature.
“What happened was very tragic and it is very unfortunate someone got hurt,” Public School board spokesperson Terry Lazarou said. “We are very relieved that there was no intent to do harm, and that while not minimizing this in any way, it was a case of a student who didn’t think things out as much as he could have.”
A 12 year old boy has been charged in connection with the incident. He made a court appearance Thursday morning. The boy, who can’t be named because of his age, is charged with assault with a weapon, mischief under 5000 dollars and using explosives.
Lazarou says when kids get back to school on April 9th after the Easter Break, they will be spoken to about what happened and how it shouldn’t happen again.
